The popular Jewish-Gentile comedy — which opened May 8, 2003, in California — is slated to begin previews in New York Sept. 28 towards an Oct. 21 opening.
WEJ Productions and Jenkay will present the NYC production of Jewtopia written by and starring Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson. Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness) directs the work currently playing at the Coast Playhouse in West Hollywood.
Jewtopia follows the story of two single guys — a Jew and a Gentile — on the verge of turning 30 who are obsessed with dating women of the other's religion. The two devise a plan to help both their causes by teaching one another their cultures.
"We're so excited and honored that our crazy little show is moving to New York," said Fogel and Wolfson in a release. "Our show takes on interfaith relationships and religious stereotypes in a wild and broadly humorous way. For us, Jewtopia is about the lengths we've all gone through to find that special someone — to love, to hold, and who'll actually sleep with us."
The cast — imported from the Los Angeles run — includes writers Fogel and Wolfson along with Cheryl David, Alan Charof, Lorry Goldman, Linda Shing, Jackie Tohn and Jenni Pulos. The design team of Jewtopia includes Desma Murphy (set), Rand Ryan (lighting), Ann Closs-Farley (costume) and John Zalewski (sound).
Tickets to Jewtopia at The Westside Theatre, 407 West 43rd Street, (between 9th & 10th Aves.) are now available by calling (212) 239-6200. For more information, visit www.jewtopiaplay.com.
