Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony Trade Artistic Planners

Smith returns to the L.A. Philharmonic less than a year after he left the orchestra for New York: he served as artistic administrator in Los Angeles from 2002 through April of this year. He replaces Edward Yim, who has been named senior vice president of the artist-management company IMG Artists.

Before coming to Los Angeles, Smith was artistic administrator of the New World Symphony in South Florida.

Tarnopolsky has been in his present position at the CSO since 2004, having served as director of programming from 1999 to 2004. He previously worked as a producer for the BBC Symphony and the BBC Singers.

L.A. Philharmonic president Deborah Borda (a former New York Philharmonic executive herself), said, "Speaking for both [music director] Esa-Pekka Salonen and myself, we are delighted to welcome Chad back to the Los Angeles Philharmonic family. His creativity, talents, and, even more importantly, his shared sense of the goals and artistic aspirations of this institution, make him the perfect fit for this role."

New York Philharmonic president Zarin Mehta said of Tarnopolsky, "Mat‹as will be an excellent addition to the senior management of the New York Philharmonic. I first met him in Chicago during my tenure at the Ravinia Festival, and came to greatly admire and respect his musical knowledge, creativity, and artistic concepts."
