Ian Marshall-Fisher, who directs the Lost Musicals series (often at the Barbican) presents two Sunday performances of a "lost" Cole Porter musical — Fifty Million Frenchmen — on July 7 and 14, at the Linbury Studio Theatre.
Starring Alan Cox and Laura Michelle Kelly, this late 1920's musical is about a young man trying to win a bet with his best friend — that within a month he will be engaged to a lovely young French girl he has set his sights on.
Richard Rodgers has come in for a lot of attention this year, thanks to the celebrations surrounding his centenary, but Cole Porter keeps surfacing as well, as this latest example of his songwriting talent demonstrates. Most of the songs are as lost as the musical, but Fifty Million Frenchmen contains the wonderful "You Do Something To Me," which is a classic Cole Porter number.
The Linbury Studio Theatre is part of the Royal Opera House complex, and very close to the Theatre Museum, so a trip to the one can conveniently be combined with time at the other.
