Craig Pearce, the screenwriter who helped pen the script of director Baz Luhrmann's movie musical "Moulin Rouge," will write a new film adaptation of "Carmen" for singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, Variety reported. Absolute Entertainment is developing the project.

Carmen tells the story of a beautiful temptress who leads men to distraction and ruin. It is best known to the public through Bizet's classic opera. It was not immediately clear whether Lopez would sing in the film.

Pearce recently finished a new screenplay of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. He also collaborated with Luhrmann on "Romeo + Juliet" and "Strictly Ballroom."

Luhrmann will soon reach Broadway with a modern version of a different opera, La Boheme. The production will open at the Broadway Theatre on Dec. 8.
