Luis Alfaro's play, Straight as a Line, has been awarded the National Hispanic Playwriting Prize by Arizona Theatre Company in association with Centrol Cultural Mexicano de Phoenix. The fourth prize to be rewarded, the honor also includes $1000. Straight as a Line centers on the unusual mother/son relationship between a young, gay Latino and his conservative mother. The play has also received the 1997 Midwest PlayLabs Award and will premiere at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.
A writer and performer, Alfaro co-directs the Latino Theatre Initiative at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. As a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, he is a member of Latina/o MacArturos, a collaborative of Latino MacArthurs who present their work, free of charge, throughout the United States.
