The $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship financially supports groundbreaking individuals, allowing them to work independently in a flexible environment, without requiring specific obligations to their benefactor. Among the artists honored are Crumbs from the Table of Joy and Intimate Apparel author Lynn Nottage; soprano Dawn Upshaw; Shen Wei, choreographer and founder of Shen Wei Dance Arts; blues musician Corey Harris; abstract painter Joan Snyder; short story writer Stuart Dybek; and installation artist Whitfield Lovell.
In addition to honorees in the arts, individuals in science, medicine, technology, social services, education and history will receive the 2007 MacArthur Fellowship, which is paid in installments for a period of five years.
