News Ma-Yi to Debut Among the Dead The award-winning Asian American Off-Broadway company will present the world premiere of Hansol Jung’s dark comedy.

Award-winning Asian American theatre group Ma-Yi Theater Company will present the world premiere of Among the Dead by Hansol Jung. In the new dark comedy about family and betrayal, three separate time periods collide in a small hotel room in Korea.

Performances will take place at HERE Arts Center. The limited engagement, directed by Ma-Yi producing artistic director Ralph B. Peña, will play November 9-26 with an official opening night set for November 11.

The cast will be made up of Will Dagger (The Convent Of Pleasure), Julienne Hanzelka Kim (Metamorphoses), Diana Oh ({My Lingerie Play}), and Mickey Theis (Desire).

Billed as a “dark comedy,” here’s how Ma-Yi describes Jung’s newest work: “Ana is a Korean American who travels to Seoul in 1975 to retrieve her dead father’s ashes. Luke is a young American soldier fighting in the jungles of Myanmar in 1944. Number Four is the name of a Korean comfort woman camping out on a bridge in Seoul in 1950, waiting for the return of the young American soldier who fathered her daughter. Three separate time periods collide in a small hotel room in Korea, mediated by a shape-shifting Jesus who first shows up as a bellboy. Among the Dead is about a family finding each other through SPAM, journals and Jesus. Mostly Jesus.”

The production will feature set design by Reid Thompson, costume design by Becky Bodurtha, lighting design by Oliver Wason, and sound design by Kenneth Goodwin.
