News Maine State Music Theatre to Present Rent Concert Featuring Interns and Local Actors The modern classic rock opera, Rent, will be presented in a special concert version June 20 and 21 at Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick. The production will feature veteran local actors and MSMT's latest group of interns.

Recent University of Michigan alum Roger Ayesh will play HIV positive musician Roger. Maine's Cliff Fantigrossi, Gregory Charette, Rylee Doiron and Rachel Duddy will share the stage with MSMT's interns. The interns will act in supporting roles onstage and work on the crew. Ray Dumont will direct, and Kurt Alger will supply costumes for the limited staging. Alger will work with Rogues Gallerys of Portland to supply additional clothing for the production to augment the traditional costumes.

MSMT executive director Steven Peterson called Rent "a show that changes lives [and] brings people together" because of its hard-hitting themes and emotional songs. With book, music and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, Rent follows a group of young artists from various races, sexual orientations and backgrounds living in New York's Lower East Side and dealing with housing crises, HIV/AIDS, addiction and the quest for self-expression. The show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, among many other accolades. It is the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history, has toured nationally and internationally, and was filmed in 2005. It is loosely based on incidents from Larson's life and on the opera La Boheme.

MSMT is located at 22 Elm Street in Brunswick. For tickets, call (207) 725-8769 or visit msmt.org.
