It has been a week of hits and misses for Natalia Makarova, one of the few ballet artists to "cross-over' to the Broadway musical stage with her 1983 Tony-winning performance in On Your Toes. Makarova is in Melbourne, Australia, to choreograph La Bayadere.
The hit comes with the critical response to her staging of the 19th century romantic ballet, which critics have praised as exquisite. Adapting the choreography of Marius Petipa, Makarova has been commended for appealing to a modern audience yet maintaining the beauty of the piece.
The miss refers to news reports of her scheduled speech to a group of young performers with the company. When time came for her appearance, organisers found that Makarova had mysteriously disappeared from her dressing room without explanation.
La Bayadere is being performed at the State Theatre, Melbourne, until March 3.
