News Mamma Mia! to Finally Play Sweden Despite the fact that Mamma Mia! boasts the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA, the international hit has yet to play Sweden.

That will change come February when the musical, which has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, opens in Stockholm. The Sweden Daily Telegraph reports that all the lyrics of Mamma Mia! will be translated into Swedish for the upcoming run.

Producer Judy Craymer told the Swedish paper, "It has been quite a challenge for [composer] Björn [Ulvaeus] to translate the songs and we have all been apprehensive about taking it back. . . . Sweden isn't the first place you naturally go to when you are rolling out a show but I think that the country is still immensely proud of Björn and Benny [Andersson]. They have got to be the nearest thing to royalty and the show is selling out fast."

Mamma Mia! features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. Over 20 million people have seen the musical, which has more productions playing around the world than any other current Broadway musical.

Mamma Mia! continues to play Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre, which is located in New York City at 1634 Broadway. The current New York company stars Carolee Carmello, Judy McLane and Liz McCartney. For tickets, call (212) 239-6262. The musical offers performances Wednesday through Saturdays at 8 PM, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 PM and Sundays at 2 and 7 PM.
