Tom Gustafson and Cory James Krueckeberg, who earned acclaim for their gay Midsummer Night's Dream-inspired movie musical "Were the World Mine," are again collaborating on "Mariachi Gringo," which is billed as a musical comedy. Gustafson directs Krueckeberg's screenplay.
"X-Man" actor Shawn Ashmore leads the cast that also features Dunagan (August: Osage County), Burton (The Constant Wife), Wopat (Catch Me If You Can), Keenan-Bolger (Spelling Bee), as well as Martha Higareda ("Te Presento A Laura") and Lila Downs ("Frida").
"Mariachi Gringo," according to Gustafson, "follows a small-town mid-western man (Ashmore) as he runs away from his family and journeys to Mexico to follow his dream of being a mariachi."
Filming began in September, with locations set for Illinois, Guadalajara and Mexico City through December. A release date has not been announced.
