The League Of Chicago Theatres has appointed its new Executive Director: Marj Halperin, for three years the director of Marketing and Program Support for the Chicago Park District.

Asked by Playbill On-Line about her strategy for the League, Halperin replied, "I plan to work on several fronts to help Chicago theatres achieve their appropriate status. With an aggressive marketing plan and enhanced member services, the League can be a catalyst to move the industry forward into Chicago and nationally."

"She possesses the perfect combination of experience, vision and enthusiasm necessary to deal with the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities facing Chicago's diverse and growing theatre community," League Board President Bob Perkins says in the League's January/February 1997 Newsletter.

In her years at the Park District, Halperin launched the park's first media ad campaign and earned the project grant and benefit money exceeding $200,000. Halperin's previous experience includes Deputy Press Secretary for Mayor Daley's Press Office and Director of Communications for the Chicago Public Schools.

Sandy Karuschak, who chaired the search committee, said, "There were many qualified applicants, and the decision was extremely difficult." Halperin, who begins Jan. 10, replaces Tony Sertich, who served as Executive Director since 1992. In her letter to League members, Halperin wrote that she plans to focus on three areas: building awareness through marketing and public relations; making operations more efficient; and reaching out to partners "who can help leverage our resources and strengthen our work."
