The ninth play in August Wilson's ten-play cycle documenting the black experience in the American 20th Century, Gem of the Ocean is set in 1904, making it the first play chronologically in the cycle. The piece concerns Citizen Barlow, a man in spirtual turmoil who is guided on a fantastical journey in search of the answers he seeks by Aunt Esther (Tony-winner Rashad), a 287-year old resident of Pittsburgh's Hill District. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, LisaGay Hamilton and Anthony Chisholm also star. Wilson's cycle will be completed with the premiere of his play Radio Golf at Yale Rep in April 2005.
