In his new role, he will oversee "season planning and program development with an emphasis on new works and commissions, special theatrical events and co-productions." From 1997 to 2001, Boynton served as CST's casting director and later its associate artistic director.
Boynton, a graduate of Northwestern University, had a successful career as an actor, winning several Jeff Awards, before becoming an admistrator.
For the past two years, Boynton has served as co-chair of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Musicals in New York.
"The artistic program of Chicago Shakespeare has become so rich and diverse," said Boynton in a statement. "I look forward to being part of the theatre's incredible plans in the coming years to extend its reach to artists and audiences here in Chicago and throughout the world."
