Classic Arts News   Mary Zimmerman to Direct Sonnambula at Metropolitan Opera in 2008-09
Mary Zimmerman, the Tony Award- and MacArthur Fellowship-winning stage director who conceived and staged The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci and Metamorphoses, will direct a new production of Bellini's La sonnambula as part of the Metropolitan Opera's 2008-09 season.

Met general manager Peter Gelb revealed the planned staging to the Associated Press during an interview earlier this week.

The co-librettist and director of Philip Glass's 2002 opera Galileo Galilei, Zimmerman makes her Met debut this fall with a new production of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, which will open will open the 2007-08 season on September 24. Natalie Dessay will play the title role, alongside Marcello Giordani as Edgardo, Mariusz Kwiecien as Enrico and John Relyea as Raimondo.

While no casting has been finalized for the 2008-09 Sonnambula, there are widespread rumors that the production (shared with the Vienna State Opera) will re-unite Zimmerman and Dessay — and will co-star tenor Juan Diego Fl‹rez. He and Dessay scored a major triumph together earlier this year in Laurent Pelly's staging of Donizetti's La Fille du regiment in London and Vienna.
