An Australian producer has obtained rights to produce Matilda beginning in September 2015 in Melbourne, Minchin told Jo Litson, arts editor of Sydney's Sunday Telegraph, in a recent interview.

Representatives for the Broadway production could not confirm the Australian plans. Minchin also declined to reveal which Australian producer was attached to bring Matilda to Melbourne.

Minchin also stated that he was collaborating with Tony and Olivier Award-winning Matilda director Matthew Warchus on a new musical, which is based on an "arty but much-loved early '90s film we are adapting for the stage: very conceptual, somewhat Stoppardian," he said.

As previously reported, Minchin is set to co-star with Toby Schmitz in the Sydney Theatre Company production of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which will begin performances Aug. 6.

Matilda, the inventive, kid-packed musical based on the beloved Roald Dahl children's book, opened on Broadway April 11 at the Shubert Theatre. It has a Tony-winning book by Dennis Kelly and a Tony-nominated score by Minchin. Previews began March 4.

The U.K. hit premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre in November 2010 and later transferred to the West End's Cambridge Theatre, where it continues to run.  The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Dodgers present the Broadway run.
