Baritone Matthias Goerne has cancelled his upcoming performance in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Mozart's Die Zauberfl‹te due to a respiratory infection.

Russian-born Rodion Pogossov will replace Goerne in the role of Papageno, the opera company announced Friday, September 17.

The production of Die Zauberflote, which opens October 8, marks theater veteran Julie Taymor's directorial debut at the Met. The opening night cast includes Dorothea Roschmann, Matthew Polenzani, Julien Robbins and Slovakian soprano L'ubica Vargiovš.

Pogossov made his debut with the Met in a 2001-02 production of Othello, and has since appeared as Marullo in Rigoletto and as Fiorello in Il Barbiere de Siviglia.
