The play is under consideration for the Off-Broadway company's upcoming season, according to a production spokesperson.

A black comedy, The Lieutenant of Inishmore opens to the death of Wee Thomas, a cat that belongs to a man currently out of town. The village folk attempt to keep this news from the man who was said to be too mad for even the IRA.

A casting notice reveals Wilson Milam will direct. The American director has directed the play for the Dublin Theatre Festival. Other credits include Patrick Marber's Closer in San Francisco and the world premieres of Tracy Letts' Killer Joe and Bug.

The staging would mark the first McDonagh play to hit the New York stage since A Skull in Connemara in 2001. Other works by the playwright include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Lonesome West and The Cripple of Inishmaan.

MCC Theatre currently presents Bryony Lavery's Frozen starring Swoosie Kurtz at the East 13th Street Theatre through April 10.
