Performances began March 27 and play to April 12. A Long and Winding Road plays Arena Stage's temporary home in Crystal City in Arlington, VA.

The "entertaining and introspective theatrical concert based on her recent album of the same name" is co-conceived and written by McGovern and director Philip Himberg, with musical direction by Jeffrey D. Harris and production design by Clifton Taylor. The show has its roots in earlier cabaret performances under the same title; this is now an expanded theatrical evening.

A Long and Winding Road, produced in cooperation with Boston's Huntington Theatre Company, which will present the production in the fall, "is a tribute to the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Paul McCartney and other ground-breaking singer/songwriters from the 1960s and '70s."

Earlier this month, McGovern, Himberg, and her creative team spent two weeks at the Huntington, culminating with several invited performances, to nurture and prepare the piece for its run at Arena Stage. Dates for the Boston run will be announced shortly.

The song list includes "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "The Circle Game," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?," "Imagine," "Fire and Rain" and many more. McGovern, who starred in Broadway's Little Women (and its tour), stated, "At this time in my life, looking back, what interested me most were those introspective singer/songwriters who influenced my musical coming of age on the way to 'The Morning After.' I started out as a folk singer in the late '60s, so it was an emotional journey for me to go back and explore this particular section of my musical influences. The concert takes us on a vivid journey back to a time when everything was possible and people set out to change the world."
