Robert Wilson stages the work which opens April 26, returning to California since its Aug. 2004 debut at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater.

The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets is a musical theatre piece featuring music and lyrics by Tom Waits, text from the late William S. Burroughs and musical arrangements by Greg Cohen and Waits. The work re-imagines a 19th-century folk tale about a clerk who makes a Faustian pact with the devil, accepting magic bullets in order to win the hand of his beloved in a shooting contest.

Cabaret veteran McGrath stars as clerk Wilhelm in the The Black Rider opposite Vance Avery, Sona Cervená, Virenia Lind, Joan Mankin, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Robert Parson, Nigel Richards, Dean Robinson, Gabriella Santinelli, Richard Strange, Monika Tahal, Jake Thornton and John Vickery.

The design team of The Black Rider includes Wilson (set and lights) and Frida Parmeggiani (costumes). Wolfgang Wiens provides dramaturgy. Bent Clausen serves as musical director. Ann-Christin Rommen is associate director and Lorna Earl is the stage manager.
