"Heathers," the wickedly dark comedy about a clique of domineering high school girls, is currently being developed for the stage by director Andy Fickman, who also staged the Off-Broadway and subsequent film of the cult musical Reefer Madness, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Joining Fickman is Reefer Madness scribe Kevin Murphy, who has penned book and lyrics for the musical that will feature a score by Tony nominated Legally Blonde and Bat Boy composer Laurence O'Keefe.

Readings of the musical have featured "Reefer Madness" stars Kristen Bell as Veronica and Christian Campbell as J.D., as well as Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked), Corri English and Christine Lakin as the Heathers.

The creators state they are aiming for a 2010 regional premiere of the musical in the hopes of a resulting Broadway bow and possibly a return to the screen as a movie musical.

Dan Waters, who penned the screenplay for "Heathers," has given his blessing to the project that is produced by Fickman, Murphy, O'Keefe, Andy Cohen, J. Todd Harris and Amy Powers. Original "Heathers" producer Denise Di Novi is on board as executive producer.
