A representative for Chicago could not confirm the Los Angeles plan and no official announcement has been made, but sources close to the project confirmed that discussions are underway. The engagement would likely run a month and begin after the holidays. Griffith would join the extant Chicago touring company as it makes its way to Los Angeles.

Griffith is due to leave the Ambassador Theatre on Oct. 5. She began her first Broadway stint July 11. Griffith won an enthusiastic review from the powerful New York Times and has been a tonic for the box office.

The actress — nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in "Working Girl" — portrays merry murderess Roxie, the role created in this revival by Ann Reinking and recently played on screen by Renee Zellweger. Griffith is joined onstage by Deidre Goodwin (Velma Kelly), P. J. Benjamin (Amos Hart), Camille Saviola (Matron "Mama" Morton), Brent Barrett (Billy Flynn) and D. Sabella (Mary Sunshine).

Chicago won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking.
