The report will be presented to the organizations that participated in it next week.
Audiences in Melbourne are currently served by two seasons of performances put on by the Sydney-based Opera Australia at the State Theatre. Opera Australia was created in 1996 by the merger of Victoria State Opera, which was on the verge of financial collapse, with the Australian Opera.
One option presented by the report is to increase funding to Opera Australia in order to bring more performances to the region and to create more opportunities for Victorian artists.
Gary Krauss, who sits on the board of the small local company VicOpera, said that funding shouldn't be sent to a national company. "There are far better ways to support opera in Melbourne than either of those options."
Krauss has been a vocal supporter of keeping arts money in the region. In particular, he has insisted that A$1.7 million left to the Victoria State Opera by Edith Melva Thompson should go to local opera companies rather than to Opera Australia.
