Directed by Timothy Bond, Apparel will play the Guthrie Sept. 24-Oct 23. The cast comprises Sterling K. Brown as George Armstrong, Cassandra F. Freeman as Mayme, Ron Menzel as Mr. Marks, Isabell Monk O'Connor as Mrs. Dickson, Michelle O'Neill as Mrs. Van Buren and Sharon Washington as Esther. In Intimate Secrets, according to the Guthrie website, "delicate secrets are revealed and lives laced together as Esther, a 35-year-old single black seamstress in turn-of-the-century New York, discovers the most exquisite handiwork is that of the heart. Though proudly independent, Esther nonetheless struggles with loneliness and wishes for the kind of fulfillment she cannot find behind a sewing machine. Her talent weaves a collection of close relationships bound by romance and disappointment — the search for love a common thread."
California's South Coast Repertory and Baltimore's Centerstage co-presented the world premiere productions of Intimate Apparel, first at Centerstage in February 2003 and then at South Coast's Costa Mesa stage in April 2003. The work played New York at the Laura Pels Theatre in April 2004. Among the awards the play has garnered are the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play and John Gassner Award for Best Play, the PEN/Laura Pels Foundation Award for Drama, the American Theatre Critic's Association's Francesca Primus Award Best Play and Steinberg New Play Award.
