Classic Arts News Met Guild to Honor Birgit Nilsson with Tribute The Metropolitan Opera Guild will honor soprano Birgit Nilsson with a tribute on May 23 at Alice Tully Hall.
Called "Birgit Nilsson: A Force of Nature," the memorial will celebrate the legendary Swedish soprano's life with accolades from colleagues and friends and the screening of film and television clips highlighting her 35-year career.

Nilsson, who sang at the Met from 1959 to 1983, died on December 25 in her hometown in southern Sweden. She was 87. She sang 222 performances of 16 roles at the Met, winning acclaim for her interpretations of Wagner's Isolde and Br‹nnhilde, Puccini's Turandot, and Strauss's Elektra.

Metropolitan Opera Guild president Susan Braddock said, "Birgit Nilsson was a mainstay of the Metropolitan Opera for more than twenty years, and adored by everyone at the Met—not to mention her legions of devoted fans. Our world of opera has lost some of its greatest performers recently—Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli to name just two—and with such a tribute we honor the past as we must, just as we do the present and future of our favorite art form."

Proceeds will benefit the Guild's opera education programs.
