The Metropolitan Opera has announced that soprano Marina Poplavskaya and baritone Alexej Markov will make their house debuts as Natasha and Prince Andrei in the season premiere of Prokofiev's War and Peace next Monday, December 10.

Irina Mataeva and Vasili Ladyuk, who were previously announced to sing the season premiere, will instead make their Met debuts in those roles on Saturday evening, December 15.

Major casting for this season's run of War and Peace — the staging, directed by filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky (Siberiade, Runaway Train, Tango & Cash), is one of the largest productions in Metropolitan Opera history, with 65 solo roles, lavish Russian Imperial balls and a major battle scene — is now as follows:

  • Dec. 10: Valery Gergiev cond.; Marina Poplavskaya, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Larisa Shevchenko, Kim Begley, Alexej Markov, Vassily Gerello, Samuel Ramey

  • Dec. 13: Valery Gergiev cond.; Marina Poplavskaya, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Larisa Shevchenko, Kim Begley, Alexej Markov, Vassily Gerello, Samuel Ramey

  • Dec. 15: Valery Gergiev cond.; Irina Mataeva, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Larisa Shevchenko, Kim Begley, Vasili Ladyuk, Vassily Gerello, Samuel Ramey
