Jessica Rothe (The Woman in Black, Call the Midwife) will star in MGM’s big-screen musical adaptation of the 1983 film Valley Girl, according to Deadline.com.

Rachel Lee Goldenberg will direct the romantic comedy from a script written by Amy Talkington for producer Matt Smith. Filming on the movie musical is expected to begin in 2017. No release date has been announced.

Valley Girl, according to the industry website, “follows Julie (Rothe), a sweet-natured San Fernando Valley girl whose world and values are rocked when she falls hard for a punk rocker from Hollywood.”

Nicholas Cage and Deborah Foreman starred in the original film under the direction of Martha Coolidge. The screenplay was penned by Wayne Crawford and Andrew Lane.

Rothe will also be seen in another musical film, La La Land, which will be released next month.
