LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Times has selected Michael Phillips as its new theatre critic, beginning Feb. 15, 1999. Phillips, 37, has been theatre critic for the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press for the past year. Previously, he served as theatre critic for the Dallas Times Herald (1987-90) and for the San Diego Union-Tribune (1993 97).

Last year, Phillips was a juror on the committee that picks the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

He has also written for such publications as Wall Street Journal, Variety, In These Times, Stagebill, American Theatre and the L.A. Times. He briefly reviewed theatre and film for public radio in Minnesota and Texas.

A native of Kenosha, Wis., Phillips studied theatre and journalism at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism.
