Detroit's Michigan Opera Theatre posted its 13th consecutive balanced budget in 2003-04, the company announced at its annual meeting.

The company also announced the completion of its 15-year capital campaign, launched in 1989 when the company bought the former Capitol Theater and began to convert it into the Detroit Opera House. The final phase of the campaign, which ended on June 30, raised $21 million; in total, the campaign raised more than $60 million.

"As you are all aware, this is a particularly challenging time for non-profit arts organizations," said general director David DiChiera. "Our ability to balance our budget represents extraordinary dedication on the part of the staff, board of directors, and, of course, the generosity of the countless corporations, foundations, and individuals who comprise the Michigan Opera Theatre family."
