The Human Race presented a 2009 workshop of the musical, which was seen in an earlier incarnation in Sacramento in 2008. Coffin's musicals Convenience and Five Course Love also enjoyed successful runs at the Dayton, OH, theatre company in the past.

Melissa Rain Anderson will direct the four-person cast that includes Couch (On the Levee) as Jen Marshall; Poulos (Rent, Convenience) as Captain Michael Marshall, USMC; Cordes as Major David Marshall, USMC; and Dana Mierlak as Trish Holmes.

According to the Human Race, "right next to me tells the story of a young military widow (Couch) who, a year after her Marine Major husband (Cordes) was killed in Iraq, is completely unable to cope with the loss until his brother (Poulos) leads her on a journey of transformation."

Coffin serves as musical director and arranger, with scenic design by David A. Centers, costume design by Lowell A. Mathwich, lighting design by John Rensel and sound by Nathan D. Dean.
