The premiere of the film version of the stage musical Chicago, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger (playing Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, respectively) and with Richard Gere as smooth lawyer Billy Flynn, takes place in London on Dec. 8.

The premiere of the film is noteworthy, since the trend at the moment is to make stage musicals out of films: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, et al. Perhaps "Chicago" will start a reverse trend.

Meanwhile, the stage show, featuring a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, is still playing well at London's Adelphi and New York's Shubert theatres.

The U.S. premiere of the film is set for Dec. 27.
