The poetic Irish drama, The Playboy of the Western World, opens Mar. 12 at the Hilberry Theatre, performed by the graduate acting company of Detroit's Wayne State University.
Joseph A. Calarco directs the Irish classic by John Millington Synge, with Matt Troyer as the yarn-spinning "Playboy" and Emily N. Miller as Pegeen Mike, the woman who believes his wild stories. (Faculty director Calarco is not the same Joe Calarco who staged Shakespeare's R&J in New York.)
Playboy performances continue to May 8 at the Hilberry, Cass and Hancock, in Detroit.
The Hilberry company is one of the nation's only graduate troupes performing a season in rotating repertory. Playboy plays in rep with Light Up the Sky (through Apr. 1) and Jeffrey Sweet's American Enterprise (Apr. 16-May 15). Hilberry graduates include Jeffrey Tambor ("The Larry Sanders Show") and Max Wright (Lincoln Center's Twelfth Night).
Hilberry tickets are $10-$17. Call (313) 577-2972. -- By Kenneth Jones
