Originally scheduled to close on Aug. 27, the play by the author of "Tuesday With Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," will run until Sept. 24.
Performances for the remainder of the engagement will be Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 PM with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 3 PM and Sunday matinees at 2 PM. All performances are at the Purple Rose Theatre, 137 Park Street, Chelsea, MI.
"The additional performances are being added to accommodate record ticket sales," according to PRTC.
"Mitch has written a delightful pay full of humor and heart," stated director and PRTC artistic director Guy Sanville. "We're thrilled with the production and happy to see audiences embracing the play in such large numbers."
Albom is not only a national figure for his bestselling memoir and novel, he is a local Michigan star who is heard on Detroit radio and read in The Detroit Free Press. (The Free Press has a policy to not have Albom's works reviewed in the paper that employs him.) "As the title suggests, it is awards season in Hollywood when movie star Tyler Johnes wakes up in a strange bar where time has no meaning and nothing is as it seems," according to PRTC. "All Johnes wants is to get to the Oscars so he can accept the Best Supporting Actor award he thinks he so richly deserves, but the odd bartender named Seamus keeps throwing a wrench in the works. Unexpected appearances by his agent, his old acting partner, his well-endowed escort and his soon-to-be ex-wife further complicate Johnes' attempts to keep his date with destiny. Flavored with Albom's signature introspection, And the Winner Is has all the charm of 'It's A Wonderful Life' for life in the fast lane."
