Mitchell and Mazzie are the special guest vocalists at the "All Gershwin Program" at Tanglewood at 9:30 PM. The evening also boasts the Boston Pops under the direction of Keith Lockhart. Jean-Yves Thibaudet will be featured on piano.
Concertgoers can expect to hear variations on "I Got Rhythm" for piano and orchestra; "Rhapsody in Blue"; selections from the Gershwin songbook; and "An American in Paris."
Brian Stokes Mitchell, who was seen in the City Center Encores! presentation of Kismet, earned a Tony nomination for his performance in the title role of Man of La Mancha. He won the 2000 Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards for his performance as Fred Graham/Petruchio in Kiss Me, Kate, and his other Broadway credits include lead roles in King Hedley II; Ragtime; Kiss of the Spider Woman; Jelly's Last Jam; Oh, Kay!; Mail; and the City Center Encores! mountings of Do Re Mi and Carnival. Television audiences will be familiar with Mitchell's work from his roles on "Trapper John, M.D.," "Roots" and "Frasier." Mitchell was elected the 12th president of the Actors' Fund of America, and he has performed in concert halls and cabarets around the country. His new Playbill Records CD is entitled "Brian Stokes Mitchell." Mitchell will make his solo Carnegie Hall concert debut in October.
Currently back on Broadway in Spamalot, Marin Mazzie is a three-time Tony Award nominee for her performances in Kiss Me, Kate; Ragtime; and Passion. Her other theatrical credits include Into the Woods, Big River, The World Goes 'Round, the City Center Encores! productions of Kismet and Out of this World and Off-Broadway's The Trojan Women: A love Story, where she met husband Jason Danieley. Mazzie also starred in the London production of Kiss Me, Kate, where she earned an Olivier Award nomination for her work. She was also seen in the Actors' Fund of America's concert staging of On the Twentieth Century.
