Classic Arts News Mormon Tabernacle Choir Surges to Top Spots on Billboard Chart, Dethroning Yo-Yo Ma Three albums by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir jumped into the top four spots on the Billboard classical chart this week, while the latest album from Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble finally lost its grip on the number-one spot.
The choir's most recent album, Choose Something Like a Star, moved into the top spot after leaping from number ten to number two last week. Meanwhile, America's Choir: Favorites Songs, Hymns & Anthems moved from number seven to number two and Peace Like a River jumped from number 10 to number four.

The Silk Road Ensemble's Beyond the Horizon dropped to number three, after spending its first 12 weeks on the chart at number one.

The choir's success seemed attributable to a tour of western states that ended on July 2, and perhaps to the Independence Day holiday. Also making a strong showing this week was the U.S. Army Band's Forward March!: Great American Marches, which debuted at number 16.

On the classical crossover chart, Il Divo's self-titled debut stayed at number one. New to the chart were Explosive, a greatest-hits collection from the string quartet Bond, at number six, and America, a disc of patriotic tunes from the Boston Pops, at number 11.
