Hansen's Cab, Mark R. Giesser's meditation on science and spiritual belief, opens May 9 at Off-Broadway's Jose Quintero Theatre, after beginning performances there April 28. Tony Randall's wife, Heather Randall (Inherit the Wind, Three Men on a Horse), Tony Award nominee Melissa Hart (Georgy, The Scarlet Pimpernel), John Wayne Shafer and Avrom Berel (The Night They Burned Washington) star. Set in the late 1950's in America's Southwest, Hansen's Cab refers to the cars that, in that time, would appear and forcibly shuttle sufferers of leprosy (also known as Hansen's Disease) to the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Carville, Louisiana. Young Jennifer Talavera, on her way to Carville after being diagnosed with the rarely fatal but disfiguring disease, escapes her guardians in Texas' Guadalupe Mountains and finds a mixed blood Apache archeologist, who convinces her that native American healing rituals may have a cure for her science could never manage.

Other plays by Geisser include The Night They Burned Washington, Pledge of Allegiance and Code of the West.

Designing the show, which runs through May 28, are Obie winner John C. Sheffler (sets), Melanie Ann Schmidt (costumes) and Aaron Meadow (lighting).

Tickets are $40. The Jose Quintero Theatre is located at 534 West 42nd Street. For reservations, call (212) 244 7529.
