News Mt. St. Helens Multi-Media Play Phenomenon Erupts at HERE, March 3-25 Phenomenon, a new play about the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Cougar, WA, using such elements as digital media and dance, will run at the HERE arts center in Soho March 3-25.

The piece is presented by HERE and Nerve Ensemble, conceived and directed by Alyse Rothman, composed by Lance Horne and written by Variety reporter and playwright Gordon Cox.

Phenomenon focuses on the lives of everyday people as they go about their business in the shadow of the soon-to-blow volcano. Among them are a waitress, busboy, journalist, geologist and cowboy. The show purports to chart "an interface between mundane moments and a grand-scale natural disaster."

The Nerve Ensemble was formed in 2001. It's multi-disciplinary pieces try to find meaning in the routines of everyday life. Founder Rothman was trained as a painter, and has been a member of the Lincoln Center Director's Lab and literary manager of the Tectonic Theatre Project.

Cox's play The Secret Narrative of the Phone Book was produced Off-Broadway in 2005.
