News Musical Adaptation of Cult Film Heathers Will Arrive Off-Broadway in 2014 Heathers, the new Laurence O'Keefe-Kevin Murphy musical based on the wickedly dark 1988 film comedy about a clique of deadly and domineering high school girls, which was seen earlier this fall in Los Angeles, will arrive Off-Broadway in 2014.

Tony Award-nominated Legally Blonde composer O'Keefe collaborated with Emmy-winning Reefer Madness author Murphy on book, music and lyrics for the musical. Andy Fickman ("Reefer Madness," "She's the Man") directed the sold-out stage premiere that played the Hudson Backstage Theatre in Los Angeles. He will repeat his work for New York audiences. Choreography will be by Marguerite Derricks.

Heathers will begin March 17, 2014, towards a March 31 opening night at New World Stages. It is currently scheduled to run through Sept. 7. Casting has not been announced.

The Los Angeles premiere was presented in cooperation with Lakeshore Entertainment, the production company that produced the film property. "Heathers" screenwriter Daniel Waters has been involved in the development of the production.

Heathers has received several New York and Los Angeles readings. A concert of the musical was presented at Joe's Pub in 2010.

"I'm unbelievably excited," O'Keefe previously told Playbill.com. "'Heathers' is the greatest teen movie of all time, the blackest black comedy, and in its way the most truthful depiction of the 80s. It's also got a great love story – actually two love stories. "There's the awesomely twisted love story, with the horribly damaged JD bringing out the worst in the brilliant malcontent Veronica. But as we wrote, we realized there's an even deeper love story: Veronica and her school. Her classmates terrorize each other and disappoint her in a hundred ways, but still she has to learn to forgive and embrace them."

Here's how it's billed: "September, 1989. Westerberg High is terrorized by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. Deliciously, darkly funny, romantic and moving, Heathers: The Musical is a truthful, uplifting parable for anyone who’s ever been in love, in trouble, or in high school."

Heathers is produced by J. Todd Harris, Andy Cohen, Amy Powers, Bruce Bendell, Jamie Bendell, Scott Prisand, Scott Benson and Big Block Theatrical. Fickman, Murphy and O’Keefe are also producers.
