The Associated Press reported that Roman mayor Gianni Alemanno met with Muti in Austria to discuss the appointment.

Previously the principal conductor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Teatro alla Scala, Muti has turned down previous offers to lead the New York Philharmonic.
