According to city officials conductor Riccardo Muti will take the reins at Rome's Teatro dell'Opera in December 2010.

Muti, who has signed on as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, would hold both positions.

The Associated Press reported that Roman mayor Gianni Alemanno met with Muti in Austria to discuss the appointment.

Previously the principal conductor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Teatro alla Scala, Muti has turned down previous offers to lead the New York Philharmonic.
