Bobby Goldman and Drew Brody’s musical comedy Curvy Widow is set to begin an open-ended engagement at the Westside Theatre Off-Broadway this summer. Tony nominee Nancy Opel will star as Curvy, a widowed, 50-something woman who immerses herself in the modern dating scene.
The new musical features a book by Goldman and music and lyrics by Brody. Peter Flynn directs, and Marcos Santana choreographs.
Following a hit debut at North Carolina Stage Company, Curvy Widow is currently playing a limited engagement at the George Street Playhouse through May 21. It will transfer to the Westside Theatre July 20, where it will officially open August 3.
Joining Opel Off-Broadway will be a cast made up of Andrea Bianchi (As The World Turns), Aisha de Haas (Rent), Elizabeth Ward Land (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Ken Land (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Alan Muraoka (Miss Saigon), and Chris Shyer (Mamma Mia!).
“From exploring internet personal ads and surviving hilarious first dates, to weighing the pros and cons of married vs unmarried men, this widow romps her way through it all with humor and perseverance, and discovers unexpected truths about love, life and sex,” read production notes for the new musical.
The production will feature scenic design by Rob Bissinger, costume design by Brian Hemesath, lighting design by Matthew Richards, and sound design by Ryan Rumery and M. Florian Staab. Andrew Sotomayor serves as musical director with orchestrations, arrangements, and music supervision by Wayne Barker. Casting is by Stewart/Whitley.
