Soprano Natalie Dessay has withdrawn from the premiere tonight of the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Gounod's Rom_o et Juliette, Opera News reports.

Maureen O'Flynn, a rising American singer who was scheduled to appear in the final performance of the production next March, will step in.

Dessay is suffering from a "bad cold," a Met spokesperson told Opera News. She is scheduled to return to the production on November 17.

The much-anticipated production, directed by Guy Joosten, also stars tenor Ram‹n Vargas. Bertrand de Billy is the conductor. It runs through December 1 and then returns February 21-March 9.
