Two-time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange has been mentioned as signed to play mother Amanda.

The New York Post reported that the Southern drama will be directed by David Leveaux, currently represented on Broadway with the revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and Jumpers. The New York daily says that the production will most likely open this coming winter at the Music Box Theatre. Lange will be joined onstage by Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard as Amanda's son Tom and Ethan Hawke as Jim O'Connor (The Gentleman Caller).

Portman has been seen on the New York stage in a Central Park staging of The Seagull and on Broadway in The Diary of Anne Frank. She is known to the movie-going public for her roles in the last two "Star Wars" "prequel" films.

Jessica Lange's only Broadway credit is the 1992 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, in which she played Blanche Du Bois opposite the Stanley Kowalski of Alec Baldwin. The actress won Academy Awards for her roles in "Blue Sky" and "Tootsie" and she was also Oscar-nominated for her work in "Music Box," "Sweet Dreams," "Country" and "Frances."

Robert Sean Leonard was most recently on Broadway in Richard Greenberg's The Violet Hour. He won a Tony Award for his performance in The Invention of Love and received nominations for his work in Long Day's Journey Into Night and Candida. Leonard's other Broadway credits include The Music Man; The Iceman Cometh; Arcadia; Philadelphia, Here I Come!; The Speed of Darkness; Breaking the Code; and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Ethan Hawke has been seen on Broadway in revivals of The Seagull and Henry IV. The actor received an Academy Award nomination for his work in "Training Day" and a Golden Globe nomination for "Chelsea Walls." Hawke's numerous other screen credits include "Dead Poets Society," "Waterland," "Floundering," "Reality Bites," "Great Expectations," "Snow Falling on Cedars," "Hamlet," "Tape" and "The Newton Boys."

The Glass Menagerie premiered on Broadway at the Playhouse Theatre in 1945. Directed by Eddie Dowling and Margo Jones, the original production featured Laurette Taylor as Amanda, Eddie Dowling as Tom, Julie Haydon as Laura and Anthony Ross as Jim. The most recent Broadway production was presented at the Criterion Center Stage Right in 1994 and starred Julie Harris, Calista Flockhart, Zeljko Ivanek and Kevin Kilner. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will present the Tennessee Williams play this summer with Academy Award winner Sally Field as Amanda.
