The National Jewish Theater Foundation — Holocaust Theater International Initiative's 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award will be bestowed upon the late, famed composer Jerry. The ceremony, featuring prior recipient and frequent collaborator Sheldon Harnick, will take place at the Bruno Walter Auditorium May 2, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Mr. Bock’s most famous works include scores of Fiddler on the Roof and Fiorello!, both of which won him and Harnick a Tony Award. Fiorello! also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
To honor the occasion, the NJTF HTII will also stage a concert reading of Rothschild & Sons, Bock, Harnick, and Sherman Yellen's one-act play with music about a Jewish family struggling to overcome prejudice in 19th century Europe. The reimagined play is based on Frederic Morton's novel The Rothschilds and the musical adaptation of the same name.
Jeffrey B. Moss will direct a cast led by Robert Cuccioli, Glory Crampton, and Gary Trainor. Ben Van Tienen will serve as musical director.
A discussion featuring Yellen and Professor Jessica Hillman (author of Echoes of the Holocaust on the American Musical Stage) will follow the performance.
