According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt announced May 12 during the network's upfront presentation that NBC has closed a deal to broadcast a version of the 1957 musical.
The Music Man, which features a book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, took home 1958 Tony Awards for Best Actor (Robert Preston), Best Conductor and Musical Director (Herbert Greene), Best Featured Actor (David Burns), Best Featured Actress (Barbara Cook) and Best Musical.
The musical opened Dec. 19, 1957, at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, where it played through Oct. 22, 1960, before transferring to the Broadway Theatre for a run through April 15, 1961. The musical was given a City Center revival in 1980 and a 2000 revival at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre (where it was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Revival).
At the upfront presentation — in regards to Fox's Grease — Greenblatt said, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."
