News Neeson, Chenoweth, Williams Talk Spirituality in New Book "Working on the Inside" "Working on the Inside," a new book by theatre journalist Retta Blaney, takes a look at the point where the seemingly disparate worlds of acting and religion meet. The volume, which is subtitled "The Spiritual Life Through the Eyes of Actors," was recently published by Sheed & Ward.

Blaney talked to actors ranging from Kristin Chenoweth, whose Oklahoma Southern Baptist upbringing has been widely written about, to Edward Herrmann, who is a convert from Unitarianism to Catholicism. Others interviewed include the Irish Catholic Liam Neeson, the Jewish Dudu Fisher, the Catholic Vanessa Williams and the Baptist Michael McElroy. Blaney also interviewed a variety of religious leaders. Blaney is a bit of an anomaly, a journalist whose areas of specialization are theatre and religion. She has written for Back Stage and American Theatre, but also National Catholic Reporter and The Jewish Week. Her previous book was "Journalism Stories from the Real World," a collection of essays. In her introduction to the book, the author states that she got the idea for the project after years of interviews with actors. She noticed that, time and again, the actors would bring up the subject of their spiritual life—a tendency she hadn't observed among members of any other profession.

"Working on the Inside" is priced at $17.95
