News New Cy Coleman Musical Like Jazz Opens World Premiere in Los Angeles, Dec. 4 The world premiere of Like Jazz, the new musical by Cy Coleman, Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Larry Gelbart, will open at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, Dec. 4.

The work, which was previously announced as part of the new 2003-2004 Taper season with no title, begins performances Nov. 21 for a run through Jan. 25, 2004. The new musical is subtitled A New Kind of Musical.

Like Jazz features the music of Cy Coleman (Little Me, Sweet Charity, Barnum, City of Angels), lyrics from the husband and wife team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (Street Corner Symphony, Ballroom) and book by Larry Gelbart (...Forum, City of Angels).

Devised from a "Portraits in Jazz" concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts created by Coleman and the Bergmans, the work featuring 16 original song will be a celebration of the art form and its artists. Taper artistic director Gordon Davidson will direct with choreography by Patricia Birch.

The complete 2003-2004 Taper season (subject to change) is as follows:

  • Like Jazz (Nov. 21-Jan. 25, 2004)
  • Topdog/ Underdog (Feb. 1-March 28, 2004)
  • Talking Cure (April 4-May 23, 2004)
  • Stones in His Pockets (May 29-June 18, 2004)
