The New Harmony Theatre, the resident professional summer company sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana, opens its three-show 2004 season — in the middle of the Hoosier state's verdant cornfields — June 11 with A.R. Gurney's Sylvia.

The season, including Alfred Uhry's The Last Night of Ballyhoo and the musical Cowgirls, continues to Aug. 15 under the artistic direction of Scott LaFeber, who stages all three works.

NHT veteran Jenn Thompson (Broadway's The Heiress and NHT's Anna Christie and Eccentricities of a Nightingale) returns to play the title role (a stray dog who comes between her master and his wife) in the Gurney comedy. Performances play to June 27.

Steve Small is featured in Ballyhoo about identity, family and anti-Semitism in Atlanta in 1939, July 9 25.

Cowgirls, the Off-Broadway musical by Mary Murfitt and Betsy Howie, plays New Harmony Theatre July 30-Aug. 15. In the show, "Jo has 24 hours to save her late father's saloon from foreclosure, and she is sure that the new act she has booked, the Cowgirl Trio, will bring in enough cash to help her do it. But when the classical Coghill Trio shows up instead, classical and country must meet in the middle to save the day."

The Sylvia cast includes Geoffrey Wade, Amelia White and David Wells. The Last Night of Ballyhoo cast includes Glory Crampton (known for Maury Yeston's Phantom in production and on CD), Kate Kearney-Patch, Alice Cannon, David Wells, Amy Lee Williams and Jeff Dattilo. Cowgirls is musical directed by Manny Moreira and will feature Terri Dixon, Elisa Van Duyne, Elizabeth Stanley, Dara Seitzman, Kyrst Hogan and Kerri Anne-Lavin.

All productions play Murphy Auditorium, New Harmony, Indiana. The New Harmony Theatre is produced by University of Southern Indiana (located in nearby Evansville). Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM.

New Harmony, in the middle of farmland, is on the banks of the Wabash River in southwestern Indiana. Now in its second decade, NHT operates under an Actors' Equity Association LORT contract.
