Written by Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee, the musical won four Olivier Awards after opening in London in 2003. 

The first North American performance of Jerry Springer: The Opera was presented at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and it has also been performed by many American regional theatre companies. The musical was seen at Carnegie Hall in 2008.

"Don't think this is some silly parody musical — this is a real opera that brilliantly and hilariously dissects the cultural forces that keep Jerry Springer on the air, after all these years," artistic director Scott Miller said in a statement. "Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee really understand the TV show, its audience, and its place in American culture, and they've written one of the smartest satires I've ever encountered."

The musical's adult language and treatment of Judeo-Christian themes have inspired controversy. A 2005 broadcast of the show in the United Kingdom elicited 55,000 complaints, and a Christian organization led street protests against the screening at nine BBC offices and announced their intention to bring blasphemy charges.
