Featuring music by Lewis Flinn and lyrics by Spring Awakening's Steven Sater, the musical will boast the talents of Tony Award-winning Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday as well as Soara-Joye Ross, Shayna Steele and Sharon Wilkins. The evening is part of the Ars Nova's "Uncharted" series. On, Girl is an R&B-infused song cycle about four women who "travel the journey of love, loss, and getting on with it."
A native of Houston, Texas, Jennifer Holliday made her professional New York theatre debut in 1980 in the revival of Your Arms Too Short to Box With God. That role led to her Tony-winning performance in Dreamgirls, and her rendition of that show's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" earned the singer-actress her first Grammy Award. She has also appeared on Broadway in the revivals of Grease! and Chicago, and her television credits include "Ellen," "Touched By an Angel" and a recurring role on "Ally McBeal." Holliday earned another Grammy Award for her recording of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday."
The Ars Nova is located in Manhattan at 511 West 54th Street. Tickets, priced $15, are available by calling (212) 868-4444 or by visiting www.smarttix.com.
