The Golden City, a new musical by up-n-coming composer Joe Drymala will be workshopped April 22 through April 24 at Brooklyn's Barfly Studio.

Featuring book, music and lyrics by Drymala, the musical follows a theatre troupe who — amidst the bombing of their city — decide to stage a show to celebrate hope. Their partially destroyed theatre is rebuilt and transformed into a "whimsical Golden City," and the evening celebrates the essence of theatre, that need to tell a story and connect with an audience. The score for includes such tunes as "Stay Awake," "When?," "Here," "Maybe I'll Change" and "The Ashes in the Sky."

With co-direction by Will Brumley and Izabela Lekic, the young company comprises Matthew Morse, Alex Odya-Weis, Bronwen Rae, Shantelle Whitehead, Michael Carbonaro, Larry Brustofski, Jason Watkins, John Fico, Erin Hall, Laura Thomas and Will Matthews. Sonny Paladino will serve as musical director.

The author also wrote the book and score for Sky's End, which was a winner at the 1996 Blank Theater Company's Young Playwrights Festival in Los Angeles. Its subsequent production at the Blank Theater Company was nominated for a Robbie Award for Best Music and Lyrics.

The Golden Cityrepresents the first developed piece from The BarFly Studio, LLC, a development/production company formed in May of 2001. Reservations for the workshop of the new musical may be made by calling (347) 581-3965. —By Andrew Gans
